
President Barack Obama named an Alabama family physician as surgeon general, tapping a doctor known for treating patients who can't pay at a time when his administration is seeking to overhaul the country's health-care system. Dr. Benjamin, if confirmed by the Senate, would be the nation's 18th surgeon general. The post has been vacant since 2006, when the term of Richard Carmona, the last surgeon general under the Bush administration, expired.
